Dietary Calculator
Bryce Talsma, DVM, ACVMR Resident, Colorado State University
Jason Bleedorn, DVM, DACVS, University of Wisconsin–Madison
This calculator provides simple calculation of a patient's ideal body weight and daily caloric requirements for weight loss, while ensuring enough daily protein is provided when calories are restricted. If protein is too low, a higher protein dense diet, prescription weight loss diet, or consultation with a boarded veterinary nutritionist to formulate a diet is recommended. Fish oil calculations are also provided for osteoarthritis and associated additional calories.
How to Use the Dietary Calculator
To complete the dietary calculator, first enter the patient information (including BCS, percent over ideal weight, and current body weight) and the requested diet information, which can often be found online. Enter any additional food given outside the complete and balanced diet.
The calculator will provide recommended energy requirements for weight loss, amount of diet to feed, and treat allowances. The amount of protein is also provided. It is important to note that senior dogs, dogs participating in rehabilitation, and dogs needing weight loss should be fed closer to 2 g protein per pound of lean body weight (if there is no evidence of renal insufficiency).
