Tick-borne diseases are challenging to diagnose and treat despite advances in diagnostic tests and availability of acaricides. Ticks (eg, Amblyomma americanum, Dermacentor variabilis, Ixodes scapularis) and tick-borne diseases may be identified in new geographic locations as a result of dogs and cats traveling with their owners, expanding the geographic range of ticks.
